DVT (Deep Venous Thrombosis) / PE (Pulmonary Embolism)

DVT refers to blood clots in patient’s arms or legs and PE refers to blood clots in the lungs.  These can be life-threatening conditions and are known potential complications associated with immobilization and/or on mechanical ventilation and/or dehydration and/or trauma and/or surgery.  It is the standard of care for hospitals to have protocols for thrombosis prophylaxis (prevention of clot formation) unless contraindicated.  If a patient develops a clot and wasn’t on a thrombosis preventive protocol it might be considered a deviation from the standard of care.
