Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Patients admitted to the ICU frequently have blood pressure problems.  Hypertension is a complex disease and can be extremely difficult to treat.  Extreme high blood pressure (or acute hypertension) is a well know risk factor that can lead to a stroke.  A stroke in itself can be the result of the patient’s disease; however, prolonged episodes of hypertension while monitored in the ICU could be considered medical negligence. For instance, if the staff caring for the patient is aware of the hypertension, but there is no documented plan to treat, and a stroke occurs as a result of the hypertension there may be negligence involved.
